I was with Doug, looks to have gadwall in it in the first pic, but with that wing speculum it looks to be have some black in the woodpile somewhere. Not everything is going to be a first cross, it could be a second time around or more. I thought the hen looked a little different as well, but it could be that she is laying next to your hybrid coot. lol

There is 2 things that would not make me identify it as a black duck.

1 is the drab olive bill indicating that if it were a black duck it would be a hen, and 2 is the gray wings of a drake mallard.

There is a dark bar on the front of the face right around the bill that young drake mallards have right before their heads turn green that hens do not have. There is plenty of white on both sides of the speculum.

If there were any black duck in that ducks family tree, it would seem to be atleast its grand parents.

I would point more towards a he/she than a black duck cross. I would expect some consistancy to both a black duck and a mallard if it were a direct cross. But almost every caracteristic it has is one that a drake mallard has in some point in its life. Just my 2 cents though. I would take the picture to a biologist and see what they think.
