Any one on here ever hunt the green island refuge? If so around what part do you huny at.

this is a good topic I have been wanting to know the same thing. That is the only reason I haven't hunted down there yet.

Well since no one seams to hunt it but me I will tell you guys a little bit about it. For the early season for wood ducks and teal no matter where you go you will shoot and get a few. I shot 2 boxes on opener, was some fast wing shooting! It is really crowded the first day since all the southern zoners come up to hunt the northern zone dates but after that it is only from 15 to 30 cars the rest of the season and plenty of places to hunt. I have never got skunked thier yet and there is alway ducks in the air flying since the refuge is right there. All the public land you can hunt does a horse shoe aroung the protected part and it ranges from timber to open water. Last year I killed mall, wood, teal, pin, and later in the year bluebill-cans. You can not shoot any geese cuz there protected but there is alot in the area so if you can find a good spot on the river down from the refuge you have a good chance.

I hunt it alot. THere are3/4 great spots, and the rest are well, spots. Go early, or don't get a spot. I go else where early in the year, I don't like crowds, and fightin. It's a good spot to hunt, lots of people tho. Same as every other spot, great one day, p*&s pore the next.

Like said earlier there are really only a few of these spots that are great spots and you better get there early to get them. Most of the time even if you have these 'special' spots, someone will still set up 50 yards from you. Thats why I own a momarsh and will set out in the middle of nowhere with no cover and still watch the ducks drop right in

Shhhh, nobody really hunts from those marsh boats! Got to have a huge boat blind with all the bells and whistles to shoot ducks! :roll:

Oh yea, those marsh boats are bad...20 ft boat blinds with 4 ft tall sides are the way to go.

I've always wanted to hunt on the Mississippi River

but I never really knew where a guy could go with out a boat. I am working on a homemade layout boat right now for use next year most likely.

Can a person without a boat hunt Green Island? Where are some other spots that a guy without a boat might throw in some decoys and shoot a few ducks.

Yes you can hunt green island with out a boat. In fact it has a very nice walk in area with smart weed that gets flooded with potholes mowed in it. I was down there for opener and the floods this year have everything screwed up. No smartweed and no corn in the refuge for the ducks and geese so who knows how long the waterfowl will stay there once the migration starts. I'm sure there won't be a whole lot of change, but field hunting should be good around there this year since they all won't be puddling around in the flooded corn where no one can hunt them. As said before. There are 3-4 great spots. Most of them are in the walk in area, but but its open enough that someone will set up right next to you and shoot your ducks while they swing your spread. I try to hunt down in the timber where you hunt a whole in the timber where its almost impossible for someone to come in without being really close. be careful. there are a bunch of idiots down there that will do about anything to get that spot. I've heard of people shooting other peoples dogs because they retrieved a duck a little to close.

In any event I have to wonder if any of you guys check to see what's changed in the regulations before you head out to hunt. For example... there's only one set of dates this year, and to the best of my knowledge the early season is always the same in both zones... so the assumption that it's "southern zone" guys packing your parking lot is laughable.

I've heard of people shooting other peoples dogs because they retrieved a duck a little to close.

I haven't heard that one before, Some one would go to jail for sure after they got out of the hospital...

I believe what the man was getting at was that in recent years, on the opening weekend of regular season, there were several Scott county plates in the parking lot.

This is second hand information though as I stay far away from GI on opening weekend, weekends in general as a matter of fact.

I've been hunting green island for about 16 years, and my dad has been hunting there for a LONG time....lots of competition, so your better off just staying away :wink: ...seriously though, if you are in a boat you need to be there early, although you can get lucky some days...depending on the wind the "spots" change...i've gotten there after sun up and shot a limit in the walk out area...infact if you are not an early riser, it is a good afternoon spot. ajb, pm me if you ever want more info or if you want to hit it sometime....it will probably have to be next year or in early december this year. i know some "spots"
