I went ahead and took every ones advice and put it into this new carving. I hope this one looks better. Please any opinions you have are greatly appreciated.

What kind of duck are you trying to carve?

Google image search that duck.
Print it out on a big sheet of paper (lifesize) and cut around the body.
Use that as a profile pattern.

That'll get you going.

Also, there are free patterns over at www.mightylayoutboys.com

To me it looks like you're not using a pattern.
Not meant as an insult or anything. My first bird was real bad... basically a block (looked kinda like yours). Use a pattern, take a keyhole saw and cut it out, you'll be glad you did.

Someone did this for me when I first started and it helped.

This is kind of a generic "mallard" or puddler body.

Maybe neck the front end down a bit more.

nice job harvey, here is one i am finishing uo to make my mould, its carved from the same foam you are using but has been gelcoated to make the mould.

it is 16'' long and 9'' wide at is widest point. sits about 5'' high inthe water.
