I just started goose hunting this year. I have a RNT Goozilla and a Beocote shortreed made by a guy over on another forum.

I like both calls, but have some xmas funds burning a hole in my pocket and was thinking of getting an acyrlic call.

The problem....there are soooo many to choices!!!

Any guidance?

Go to a store and start trying them out. What works well for others may not work well for you. I have 6 Zinks and 1 Foiles. To me, they are the easiest blowing calls and sound great. To others, that might not be the case. Dont be afraid to look on multiple waterfowl sites. I've gotten four that way that were in brand new condition for about half the price of a new one.

Calls are like any other gear in waterfowling. What works for one may not be the one for another. Calls are like that as well, especially if there are diffrences in the levels of skill. There are also things to consider like:

What areas will you hunt?
Water set up?
Big water or small water?
Fields?
Both?

Do you target big birds?
Little birds?
Both?

These are just a few things that you need to think about. So, my best advice is go somewhere you can try as many diffrent ones as possible.

If you can't go that route I tell guys to look at the big 4 or 5 call companies and try to narrow it down from there. If you call the shop and tell them what you are looking for and your ability they should steer you in the right direction. They are the bigger names in calling for a reason.

Most retail stores will let you blow calls in the store...moderately.

Another great option, if you wanna wait, is to wait for the show season. Hit Burlington in February or usually the main show season begins late summer. Most call manufacturers will set up booths to push product. Great way to meet the people behind the calls and run a lot of different calls and call styles.

I have a question? I'm a germ a phobe starting about this time of year when everyone is toating some kind of flu. At Burlington does everyone just blow the same calls or do they dip them in alcohol or something to let the next guy try? Or do I loose man points for even asking?

And are these 4 call makers represented there.....
LMC
Grounds
Zink
Foiles

All depends on the call makers. Not too many wipe them down. No man points lost on this. If I were you, bring your own alcohol wipes with you that way you can clean it before you a call to make sure. You can get them pretty cheap at wally world and may save you a trip to the DR in the end.

Regardless of the trial...very funny!!!! Based on that whole deal, I doubt Foiles will show his face. If he does he will have a slow booth..I don't think foiles will make much of a profit that day. I'll admit to having one of his calls, but i'll never give the guy another penny after that stunt..

Grounds might not be there either.. i know he has cancelled some shows do to the health of his mom..
Calls are all different for all guys and all call makers should be able to get you to blow a call right.. Its all in the way they tune it..Tuning is the toughest part in getting a call somebody hates or loves.. That is why i like going to shows. I can get my calls to blow for about anyone and anyones likings...
It will be hard for you to buy this call or that call and get what you want no matter how big or small the call maker is. If your buddy has one or you can try one out that is the best way. I know of alot of guys who have bought a high end call because "he" said it was the CHIT and to have it sent and cant blow the dam thing,,, I did it with my first short reed (a halfbreed) that i bought off of Fred Zink.. It took me about 3 yrs of being mad to learn how to blow that dam call...

grounds may not be there, but usually the molt gear boys will be pimping calls for tim. burlington is the best place to try new calls for sure. here you will get 100 different opinions, but if you like the calls you have give that brands acrylics a try first and move on from there.

Best place to get drunk too... Half price Happy Hour starts at 16:00 on Friday... If you're not 21, pop's half price too.

It is a great place to buy calls though. Every call I've bought has been from Burlington. It is very cool to meet the guys behind the calls as well. I would have never bought a Lynch Mob until I met George Lynch, now I have 3 of 'em. It's a great time so go slow and check everything out.
