Ha ha I just tried to google up something on "crowds on opening day", "potlicker duck hunters", etc. and this was at the top of Google Images. My ex-college hunting buddies in 1982, in a Texas WMA on opening day. Looks like a lot of spoonies in that bag. We came in from the Gulf beach side, pulled our boats ashore, and walked back in the marsh about 150 yards. Those oak trees in the distance are the highway three miles away. We had this big pond to ourselves; one of the benefits when they created a new WMA before the Internet was that the public had no clue about it. We'd already explored the place 10 years before. That day we just shook out 4 bags of decoys and plunked down in an old blind that had little cover, it didn't matter. Got soaking wet in the Gulf, returning. Tough going for 14-foot jonboats, the Gulf of Mexico, lots of whitecaps in a south wind.

Well I went and checked this place out for the first time tonight. A little different than what I was expecting. Seems like you can just park on the highway and walk in just about anywhere. No wonder it gets crowded.
If you "just park on the highway and walk in" don't even attempt to wade across that channel unless you like swimming. Also there is a lot of private land that is around the marsh watch who's land you cross. Some guys aren't very fond of people going through their land.....

I definitely drove around looking for signs. The dnr atlas kinda gave me a rough idea. I'm not saying I would do that it just seems like it'd be easy to do. I do respect private land. Just looks like a lot of easy walk-in places I thought

The south side about only way in is at west end ramp. But there your basicly limited to hunting off the dike. You can walk into the center section from there after you cross the bridge over the channel on the dike. But ther is limited cover. You can walk into west end but you have to go around to the back of the marsh to do that. Other place you can walk in is on the north side of the main ramp on 14. There's a patking lot by the river. A bunch of us guys that hunt big on a regular basis usually get together at the west end ramp. We are pretty easy going for the most part lol. If your up threre opener stop by we will help get you in the right direction if you need it
