So I'm looking at getting an all purpose rifle. One for coyote hunting, deer, "if sh*t hits the fan."

What are people's recommendations for rifle calibur, brand, type, ect.

Cost: within reason...still would have to get a scope ;)

A 25-06 would be a good choice I shoot 75 grain v-max at coyotes and my buddy takes it to southern ia . I think he shoots 125 grain bullet thru it at deer. I origanaly bought it because I was thinking just like you. Always wanted to go shoot a mule deer haven't made it out west yet It's a good flat shooting gun but I have split a fox into 2 peices a little big for them.

the exact combo I used love the 25-06, but your going to have to handload if you want to get down to the 75gr. I have family that shoots 87gr. for deer and coyotes and love them.

I about tore a fox in half with it and ripped a 6 plus inch hole in a coyote. I would have no problem using it on a deer if I hunted the rifle season down south or out of state.

I went a little over kill with a 30-06. I don't care if I blow the coyote up. I may want to go elk hunting some day and I won't have to buy a nother gun. Buy big enough that you dont regret it later.

25-06 gets my vote. Killed 100s of yotes with mine, and a few deer. My buddy took it to Nebraska and killed a couple Muleys with it. Another good one is the 270. I've killed yotes with mine, a lil over kill, and will kill deer, Elk too. Ammo is easy to get also.

AR-10 in .243 Win if you want a long range shooter... its a necked down .308 Win so basically, you'd just be looking at a different barrel... you can build your own, the .243 has some of the best ballistics.

If you don't plan on making 300 yard shots regularly I'd go with a 6.8 SPC or like caliber, with the 6.8 you'll be legal for deer but you also have all the advantages of a a smaller rifle caliber when it comes SHTF, ammo capacity, recoil...

The biggest downside to these rifles are you don't have a bunch of MIL SUR+ ammo floating around but they'll do what you need them too.

I wouldn't go with a bolt for SHTF unless I wanted to be a squirrel with a bunch of Mosin Nagant's and ammo tins, then dig them up come the 4 horsemen :25:

another vote for the 25-06. just got mine and dont know why i never bought one sooner. factory rounds are a little pricey tho imo.
I agree...paying $1.50 - $3.00 a round seems steep. Especially, if I want to go out to the range and just go shooting...

7.62 or .308 seems like it might be a more economical choice...however, I like the idea of shooting past 200 yards. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Who said the .308 was limited to 200 yard shots? As far as I know the 308 (7.62x51) is still the issued sniper rifle for US Military with an effective range for 800-900 meters depending on the branch of military.
