Probably the most ducks I’ve seen for an opener in a long time. Lots of gadwall and widegon around as well as teal and wood ducks. Lots of high flying flocks both ducks and geese. Overall I’d say it was a good day!
Pretty slow here on the east side got our wood ducks and a couple teal.. everything was miles high and skittish. Alotta water and even more people... over 30 boats at midnight... can’t wait for deer season and pheasant season so the marsh gets less traffic... had an awesome breakfast and still beats work so oh well. Bring on the cold weather
Ended up with 17 Sat morning, stayed until about 9 and then the lull. Plenty of teal and woodies, not many big ducks. Took the boy Sun afternoon for the SZ youth in a flooded corn field that was holding mallards but they didn’t cooperate very well. Muddy, wet and miserable
Where we went for the north opener was incredibly slow with not a lot of shooting around us either. Was very surprised, generally the marsh area not far away sounds like a war zone, but the shot were few and far between. We ended with two woodies and a teal which is pretty pathetic for an opener.
A friend ended up shooting a seven man limit of woodies slightly further north of where we were so I think we were in an area that may have been hit decently hard by teal hunters and flushed out some of the locals. Water is also high, which could explain the lack of birds flying around
3 GWT's in North central IA. That snow and sleet made for a wet morning. Saw lots of birds though. Marsh had great water. Main channel was plugged with floating bogs. Big boats with outboards will have difficulty getting out.
