What are you doing this Fall ?

How many motion decoys ?

I hunt from my 16 Lowe 35hp Johnson Beavertail Blind and can hunt three people. I run decoys on how many people are hunting, If I am by myself around 50-60 Duck Decoys and 6 Canada Goose decoys is about all I care to put out by my self.
Three People we will run 80 plus Duck Decoys 6 Canada's Geese decoys. Two Hunters some where in between.
It also depends on where I am hunting Wetlands and backwaters of Mississippi River one can run more Decoys than that very powerful Missouri River along the Iowa Border.

When I hunted out of Santee in a boat blind, 100+ duck decoys, 4 dozen goose floaters and very rarely a spinner or 2.

Field hunting I have 13 dozen full bodies, 10 dozen sleeper shells and 8 spinners. Depends on number of hunters, never more then 4 and usually only 2 I will put out what I think it will take. If on the X usually no more then 4 dozen, running traffic the trailer could get emptied. Snow on the ground all the sleepers and maybe 5 dozen fullbodies but maybe depending on situation, number of hunters etc.

Pond: AJ and I run 40 goose floaters and 5 dozen full bodies. No duck decoys. Most of the time they land in the goose decoys but if we put them out its about a dozen ducks.

Field laydowns: We run everything we have (210). If we are on the X we put out 60 plus

Marsh: We run around 3 dozen with a spinner. Sometimes it's not about the size of spread but your location.

Walk in, as few as i can get away with , hardly ever use a spinner anymore. If one of the younger guys wants to carry it im fine ,but not afraid to put up right away depending on how the bird's react.
Feild hunting geese always change it up . Anywhere from 18 to 100 . Never try to give the same birds the same look.

3 dz ducks 4 goose floaters. If i cant get them with that i dont need them. i have had guys with huge spreads out on the same bodies of water as me and they never seem to do better. robos on new ducks have kinda killed the need for big spread viability

The Duck Boat Company Blackjack boat blind. 3 doz mallard dekes. 2 spinners. Never needed more. Routinely finish mallards, some large flocks.

Permanent Blind by water ?

I hunt mostly big public lakes so no permanent blind but lakeshores I go with one or two dozen duck dekes early season and then go to four dozen or so as the wintering numbers grow here in Oklahoma. Even to put singles in the dekes late season you need some numbers. The 4dz are floaters and I add a couple dozen full body and shells along the shore to simulate the loafing they do on these big Okie lakes. If I am after geese I put out 80 floaters with majority Canada but a few snows and specks mixed in. They fly together down here---Yea I know many don't believe that but over the last ten years behavior has changed big time. I add another two dozen sleepers and shells with a dozen full body lessers and a dozen full body decoys all with motion stakes.

Boat Blind ?

If I am by myself I use my boat blind a LOT. Porta bote that I built a quick set up blind for. Usually I go with the same as above. A 12' will carry a surprising amount of decoys with dog and one hunter. Obviously I don't do the goose spread out of the boat.

Walk in Hunting over water ? Quit that after I turned 60 several years ago

Permanent Pit Blind in Field ? Never liked that much and do it only if someone invites me

Layout Blinds in Field ? I use the layouts mostly on waters edge if cover is just short grass. Some of the public lakes allow grazing so you have zip for cover and a blind or boat looks like a giant beacon.

What are you doing this Fall ? I started out early then normal this year and have a few hunts under the belt. Seeing some migration of mallards but mostly teal and LOTS of buffleheads. Odd year last year and looks like the same this year. Used to start after Thanksgiving or when it got cold. Public lakes open up some down here since most Okies are not real cold weather fans and deer/quail hunting keeps them busy even if they are.

How many motion decoys ? I have one spinner and a LD flapper but BOTH have remotes and I won't hunt unless you can turn them off. Late in January I like to have a spinner at one end of the J and the flapper with slow speed setting in the hook. I do like the jerk lines mixed in IF you have the line to the blind hid well. My hand made flag is the best motion decoy. Easy to turn off LOL. It seems to turn a lot of flocks but the minute they turn I put it away.

Ducks or Geese ? the numbers needed are going up in both categories---six dozen with a couple dozen shore dekes on ducks and still the 80 floaters but going to five dozen full body and shells. Way more pressure on the lakes now than even five years ago and both ducks and geese are so much more refuge oriented. Have to look like one to get a look.

Boat Blind ? Still using my Portabote home made but not near as much. I have a Final Assault I use as a layout blind too that I have used more in the early season but it doubles as the boat in shallow water situation which limits decoy numbers. I tow it with the Portabote in deeper water and can load it with dekes.
Walk in Hunting over water ? I bought Tanglefree's one man w dog blind and love it. I often haul it out on the portabote and just keep the boat around in case the dog has a retrieve that takes it way too far out for my comfort.
Permanent Pit Blind in Field ? Don't hunt fields
Layout Blinds in Field ?

What are you doing this Fall ?It was a weak year on the big lakes early. If you weren't semi retired you couldn't hunt only the major fronts and likely had little to no luck in the big lakes

How many motion decoys ? Two jerk lines on ducks and just flagging for ducks and geese. Way to many people using way to many motion decoys and by the time they get to Oklahoma you might as well put up warning signs for the ducks.
