Home made Ice eater?

Has anyone tried to build an "ice eater" out of a trolling motor? Looking to use stuff I have around the house without spending a bunch of money. Have a couple of ideas but was wondering what people have tried. What has work or maybe even what hasn't worked? Thanks again for any help

ha...yeah, i've been trying do this for a few years now. sounds easy, but so far it hasn't quite worked out. you either need a good sized inverter or a generator that has an 12v circuit built in. the problem is in the fact that because you need to keep it going at a good clip, the motor draws too much to run on a small inverter. let me know if you get it figured out because i've been trying for a while now
I haven't tried to build one myself yet. Check out Waterfowler Innovations. They have 1/2 hp and 3/4 hp versions. I understand the point about not wanting to spend a bunch of money, but at least it might give you some ideas. If you end up deciding to purchase one, MarshMonster is an authorized distributor for them.

Good Luck

Altrocker- I guess I was thinking about just running it off the battery just like you would in the boat. Using just the motor (strip the shaft and controls off) build a simple stand. Just an idea. Mainly I was checking to see if anyone had built anything like that. Not trying to keep water open all night. Thinking more of opening a small hole and keep it open while we hunt. More of an afternoon loafing area not creating a roosting spot.

detwing9 - those look like they are pretty sweet and good price when you are looking and the extended cord and the stand included. Wish i had some extra cash laying around
Yes I have made one out of just the trolling motor prop and motor. We used heating duct stuff that was round. I'll throw some pics up in a bit.
Can't see anything. Not sure might just be my computer. Just letting you know.
I really like the idea. Cheap! Did to reduce the pipes to get more control on flow of water? How big of hole did it open up? What size trolling motor did you use? Sorry for so many questions but that is the exact project I would like to be completed for this season. Thanks. Any info would be a great help.

We keep it in the boat so it hooks right to the battery and keeps water open all day. It's off of an old Minn kota 50 lb. Yes reduced size for flow of water. Good luck!
Awesome idea. Necking the diameter down is kind of like what they use on a Pelton wheel! Very nice.
I see my new winter project
