Hard Blind Build

Last year I got tired of the commercial pop up style blinds. I decided to try and make my own, to custom fit my boat. I went to local sewing shop and got them to teach me to sew, with the purchase of one of their (cheap) machines. I made a pop-up out of condura fabric and conduit. I ended up hating that blind too. So, last season I decided that I was either going to buy or build a hard sided aluminum blind.

After researching, I decided to build my own. I liked the pictures that I found of the Phowler style blinds, so that's the one I decided to copy for the most part. I have never welded aluminum and had to go out and buy a spool gun. I have never taken a welding class or any type of metal class but I didn't want to spend a lot of money to have someone build me a blind.

For never doing anything like this before, I think it turned out pretty good.

(I can only upload one picture at a time)

I tried to take some, but they didn't turn out. I will try again next time I pull it out of the garage. I will only have it on there for a few more days. I plan on sticking the blind in a friend's barn for the next 4-5 months, so if you want to see it, let me know

I kept every receipt that I had from buying materials. Without the cost of the spool gun, I have just over $1300 in it. This includes paint, hinges, rivet nuts, fabric, rivets, paint gun, rivet nut tool, everything. I also had to go out and buy more square tubing because I rebuilt the doors once (they weren't wide enough). I also have an extra sheet of aluminum skin left over.

After building it, I completely understand why blind builders charge as much as they do.

I think that turned out awesome if you ask me. I recently got an F4 that I want to do something similar to if I can ever find that time. Did you put any shelves inside?

No I didn't. I thought about it, but I want to keep the weight down. I may add some later. My boat will be underpowered with this blind, people, dog, and gear. I have a stock 37HP Boss on it.

Very nice, how long is that boat? Do you just unsnap the rear cover when motoring? QUOTE]

18'
The rear cover has a very large zipper going down the center. There are only snaps where it connects to the boat. It is screwed to the blind itself, so it can't blow off the boat going down the road. The zipper allows me to be able to use the back of the boat as a way to get in and out. I am also not limited on my steering with the tiller handle.

Very nice, how long is that boat? I built an EMT blind on my 17' F4 last year. Yours looks longer. I stopped mine at the front deck because I ran out of time but want to extend it before the season. Do you just unsnap the rear cover when motoring? I sort of wrapped my blind around the back and put a vertical hinged door on the starboard side that I open when running and the port side has a cut out to allow the tiller handle to move all the way over. Sweet work!
