Now that the season is over Question for you fellas???

We hunt a cattail marsh and have spent manys years Developing Holes deep in the cattails to get away from others and to kill ducks. Of course those holes are Public and subject to others crowdin in on you. We are talking Deep Cover.

What I can't understand is why someone would hunt one these holes without a NO DOG. The chances of droppong a bird in the bathtub size open water is about 2%, yet time and time again someone will set up and shoot away. With a HUGE cripple/ kill loss. One day our dog found 4 birds from the group from the day before and I think 12 for the season.

As someone who greatly respects the resource we have and as the boys say is hell on cripples. Why would you put yourself in a position where you know up front that you'll loose more than you find?????????

Any Thoughts??

My question is, why did you only open a bathtub size hole? It's a sumbitch finding cripples in cattails with a dog.

Yes, I guess I agree, it's dumb for people to do. But if they are seeing you kill birds there, they will do it regardless.

Years ago on opening week-end I would go to Cones Marsh with my dog. We would walk the tall grass areas and pick up the cripples. It was good training for the dog and I got to burn up some fat.
The best part of waterfowling is not the kill.

I hunt a hole the size of a baseball infield and have a hard time splashing them in the hole, BUT my dog finds 99% of the birds. I would not hunt that spot or anything smalled without a dog.

People love to shoot and if there are birds to shoot you can bet someone will do it.

Kind of like the guys that skybust on a lake shore....With no waders or dog.....What do they think will happen??

That water is cold when you have to strip to the undies to retrieve a bird in Novmeber. Almost makes the outie an innie.;)

Some people are all about killing. I for one will spend a half hour looking for a cripple. One evening this year my buddy shot a mallard and crippled it and getting thru the cattails and marsh is tough. He looked for about a half hour and gave up. Then about an hr later he went at it again and this time I helped. Took us about an hr of circling around but we ended up finding the mallard. I just hate to see a cripple get away. It was the same way when I was a kid hunting pheasants w/o a dog I would look for that bird until dark.

I was fortunate enough to hunt behind a great dog when I started waterfowling. That dog was taken away from me last year and had to hunt without for the first time this year. I was seriously amazed (and disgusted) by how many birds we lost in the flurry of first light in weeds and cattails. We missed shots at so many more birds, spending hours searching for the birds that were already down. Just didn't know any better because I never had to worry about it.

I'd like to hope some people are in the same boat. I also know there are people that have a dog and guns and dekes but have never trained their dog to their full extent that lose a lot of birds. And we all know people are bound to shoot at anything just for the fun of it.

As this season went on I learned where I could and could not shoot at birds so they'd drop in the drink where I could find them.
