DIY layout boat trailer

I am starting a new project of a triple decker layout boat trailer. I am going to purchase an otter 1200 from marshmonsters, and I already have an old trailer that I picked up a few years back for 50 bucks that I want to use for the build. I also have 3 freinds from this site who I hunt with on and off through out the season, so I am preparing this for the possibility that 3 of us get together at the same time for a trip. With this unseasonably warm weather, I have started the project early. The pictures are of the partially stripped down trailer.

Does anyone have a double decker trailer that would not mind sharing a few photo's?

I forgot you can't link to outside sites on here...(apparently?)

You can either email me and I'll forward you the link or you can go to duckhunter.net and get into the search function. Search for "Layout boat trailer" under Boats, blinds, Motors. The 4th thread down, started by Nic870

Thanks for the help, but I couldn't find the search function. Can you post the link in a pm?
Doesn't look like it - shoot me an email

That last picture in the series is exactly what I had planned. Thanks a bunch. Now its time to order some steel.
Well, I got the trailer into the shop and did a little welding on it today. I got the frame built.

Looks good John. I'm sure that I don't need to tell you this, but don't overload those axles.

I put 100lbs of steel on it today. The layout boats will be 450 tops. It used to have a 1000lb fiberglass behemouth on it. I think it will be fine. The bearings will be replaced before I travel anywhere with it. I doubt the whole trailer will weigh more than a grand with boats on it when I am finished.

I used 11 guage 1.5 inch steel. The frame is 7' 3" by 55" wide by 60" tall.

I figured you would make sure to keep it under weight, but I just figured I'd remind you. Why the double decker though?
Its a tripple decker. 3 guys that I hunt with are picking up layouts too. If all 4 of us hunt together we will put 1 in the back of the truck, and 3 on the trailer. Your presidents gas prices have insured that we will be hunting in packs next year so its affordable. :p

I know. We haven't seen prices like this since the days of Bush.:p
Looks good, keep em coming!!! I wish there were a few marshes around that were ankle/shin deep with a hard bottom to easily walk those babies around....Huff
We hunt alot of sheet water. The day of cattails to hide your boat in have gone by the wayside around here.
I wish we had some of that around here....A guy could put out a pretty cool spread that way. I'd for sure have a small layout if we did...
how big is your layout I did not think we could use them in iowa.
I don't have the boat yet, but it is going to be 12' by 44". I built the trailer to fit a 13' by 50" layout.

What do you mean that you cannot use them in Iowa? I have never heard such a thing.

We can't use sinkboxes. A layout boat is not a sinkbox.
ahh ok I was misinformed then i was looking at a layout and the guy said he did not think they were legal here

I know I have seen them at different marshes, but you still scared me a little when you said that. I am investing most of my free time and extra money this summer on my layout boat projects. If we don't have a terribly wet spring, and we have a decent amount of rain this fall, the sheet water at the marshes should be super thick and falling laying over by the migration. Not exactly what my big boat likes to travel through.
a layout boat is different from a sink box two completely different things, Layouts are legal
