I own a few car forums and we have a total of 69,000 members... if I ran this same contest there, the server would crash, for sure.

No, but I monitor it. The load will increase .5%, not much. So from .5% to 1.0% or so. The server can stay at 90% for a while... so it has a long way to go before it crashes.
You guys rack the hard drives (that's the slow down you feel). Will be upgrading those in the future.
