To clarify: Law enforcement is not happy that a and veteran can just walk in and get the permit to carry. Just being in the military does not train you in day to day civilian carry procedures and the civilian legal rights and wrongs. And I being a veteran agree with that. And I favor required classes in the legal issues of which most people would never even think of. Even if you took down someone threatening you, the family of that bad can sue for loss of income, loss of affection, and much more and there are many attorneys out there just waiting to jump into something like that. Spend the money and take the class we are talking here and you will see. Actually, the class is protecting your family more than you protecting them from any potential break-in to your home.
That's fine to take the course, but if you follow the military rules for Deadly Force you'll be just fine...Devil Dog...

I think we should also make all the gang bangers take the course as well.

Sorry even though I took the class, I don't see any day long course helping much in the 2-3 sec's I'll have to make that choice to use force or not should it come up. That's why our police and soldiers TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN- anyone who has been there knows when the real shit hits the fan and the adrenalin pump is roaring it all comes back to mussel memory and all the training and no couple hour class can fix that. Sorry the class is a feel good, basic safety class with some common knowledge and legal overview. AGAIN I recommend the class, but its so much more than a yearly refresher.

I found this interesting.

There is a big difference between the two situations. And actually the second is more realistic of whats going to happen and what needs to be done to help out. We will never have enough police officers on the ground to protect you or your family. NEVER. Take not that when we have any type of gun attack today every type of law enforcement around shows up at that site thus leaving vast areas unprotected and open to robberies, which is happening. During the Katrina hurricane several years ago, the law enforcement on duty went home to protect their families and we ended up with Mexican military there. How did you like to know that. What we are talking about here is the normal day to day we all live in now. And what encouraging all types of individuals to bring loaded weapons to the party is a potential powder keg. Give you example from a class I was exposed to. You are sitting in McDonalds and you look and some guy is beating on your car with a ball bat. What are you going to do? Basically, you are going to do nothing. You can call the police and watch. Because if you go out there and upgrade the situation to a life threatening conflict then you are the problem. That vehicle is just a piece of metal and can be fixed. And I hope they covered situations like that in the class. Just remember that we do not have the authority and freedoms of a police officer. I worked in the District Court of Black Hawk county for several years and got to read the evidence transcripts and see the awful evidence photos. I also carried a weapon for lots of years in Waterloo and DM because of all the physical threats. I worked with the police in the city I now live and have actually be in lineups. I have breakfast some days right next to a Sheriff and we discuss all this stuff. My military was an assignment to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe(SHAPE) in Paris, which is NATO, and had a Cosmic Top Secret Clearance. Some people might want to be careful in make a judgement.

You being in a line up does not surprise me Howard and we all know you eat breakfast 300 yards from 4000 Cubans who are trained to kill you, so don't think for one second that you can come down here, flash your Top Secret Clearance, Clarence badge , and make me nervous.

Never intended to both you Tom. bd got me fired up. What class did you take? The one that they were talking about at first part of this post. Another point that hasn't been resolved is that many hunters now consider it ok to carry a loaded and uncased (hunting gun) in the vehicle since they have a permit to carry. Not sure how a deputy sheriff would handle that. I'm going to ask a Sheriff tomorrow morning if he is there. I know our police dept. wouldn't be real happy on that one. Probably will have to go to court to get it resolved.

Actually it is considered ok. And yes... shotgun, rifle, handgun can be loaded, uncased,, carried concealed, or OPEN in Iowa. the weapons permit does not discriminate.BUT do read between the lines when considering leaving a loaded /uncased weapon in the vehicle with someone without a permit in the vehicle.. Ex. Pumping gas.

With that being said. And being able to have a loaded/uncased gun in the vehicle.. Legally.I don't and won't allow it in my truck when hunting for safety reasons. If the shotgun or rifle is without a case, it's unloaded before anyone gets in. Permit or not. Handguns are my exception. In the holster tho.

Don't forget, it's not a concealed carry permit.. It's a permit to Carry a weapon. It's your choice to conceal or carry open

Got my permit in 1984, sheriff office offered a class twice a year. Ron Hazen was sheriff and Greg Orr was training officer. Have renewed it every year since. Think I hold one of the oldest non professional permits issued in Muscatine county. That the holder is still alive. Have carried ever since.

Not sure what the regs are. But I do suggest that you take a class anyway. I learned a lot when I took my class. Lots of stuff that is brought up that you never think about and are not aware of. There is a lot of underlying stuff you need to be aware of and its not just about being able to carry a gun.
And I learned next to nothing in the CCW class I took. I too, am a veteran, and took the class anyway.

The instructor told us to read the regs ourself to know when to engage an attacker. :drunk:

That's exactly how my course went. Basically it was a firearms safety course. The legal questions I had were answered with a "That's a good question. You'll have to ask someone else for an answer. I'm not a lawyer..."

I was told that you can get a concealed weapons permit without taking a class if you your honorably discharged from the military. Is this true? My dd214 from the marine corp has a pistol qualified award on it and I was discharged honorably. I reside in black hawk county. I was just trying to avoid going to a class to get it since it seems like free time is always hard to get. Thanks to anyone who has any info on this.
Your DD214 will work for you.

you start the process online for blackhawk county. https://blackhawkia.permitium.com/entry

btw: Iowa does not have a concealed weapons permit, it's called a permit to carry. ;)

No offense but I've trained with and have helped trained law enforcement- many of them are incompentant at best. I've seen members of Tactical Response units shoot civilians in traning scenarios on more than one occassion. Don't get me wrong- I respect them and will gladly share some range time with them. I'm simply stating that being a LEO doesn't qualify you for a damned thing. Your training does.

Take the class and then take more.

And....there I go responding to a year old post

Definitely take a class that stresses the legal responsibilities of having the permit. Maybe some others on here can suggest the good ones. Law enforcement hate the fact that veterans can just walk in and get a permit t carry. Sheriff's are planning a really tough process to get it renewed though. I've seen people that I wouldn't let have a bb gun but now can legally carry. And they have no idea what the legal issues are that allow them to use a weapon, inside your home or out. It is a complicated system that could get one in a lot of legal troubles.
Must not of Been MARINES, and as far as training goes I don't know that our training of Deadly Force is much different if any then the civilian version that's why you can use a DD214, We're extensively trained on safety and weapons handling where a class doesn't cover any of that. As far as the sheriff not wanting to give up a permit to military, got mine in a week they had my Son's done in a day when he was back on leave over Christmas and thanked him for his service. If the system mandates a class, so be it, safety is why we carry.
