Since my brother has informed me that the area he hunts deer is full of coyote we have decided to start hunting them (plus it gives us something to do now that waterfowl seasons are over). We have gone out a couple times and have not got any to come into the calls. Is it legal to bait coyote in Iowa? I read through the regulations and could not find a definite answer to that question. We have been keeping the wind in our favor, camoing up, and give 30 to 40 min to each set before slipping back out to a different spot. We just figured that baiting them might work out good for us in this area as we have some nice blinds we could hold up in and wait for them. Any tips will be greatly appreciated! :61:

Honestly if you're gonna bait them set snares in the runs. Don't think you'll have real good luck shooting off bait piles. But if you trap it make sure you are back far enough from the bait with your sets.

My brother suggested snares as well. I have never trapped before and am uncertain about the regulations for it. Plus then I'd have to have a furbearer's license I assume. Thanks for the suggestion!

Trapping is about over and it is illegal to have traps around exposed baits I believe

Coyotes are very very smart animals! One trick I learned when I started calling them in is that every time they come to the call they will go about 50 yards down wind of it to make sure all is clear before they "finish". Try setting up with a 1/4ing wind and having the downwind side of where you think they will be coming from. Also use lots of cover scent, fox urine works good. Apply it to the bottom of your boots before walking in and again when you get to your spot before you go set the call out (if you're using and ecaller). Also, a lot of times they will sit on the edge of the field just far enough in the timber so you can't see them but they will bust you very easily. Keep at it, once you get it down you will have a blast. My best set was at night just after a fresh snow, turned the ecaller on and in 14 seconds I had 4 coming at me on a b-line!

Youre not trapping the bait. You have to be so far away from a bait station on dry land. Without looking at regs I won't say how far. Let them make a trail or trails and then set them. Like what was said before. They are very cautious about coming in to anything new.

I have tried the crosswind set up a couple times also with no luck. I'll keep at it, but I like to give some time between trips to let things cool back down there. I don't want them to start patterning me. I have viewed some footage of a group of coyote breaking into a serenade after a couple howl calls, I have to admit that would make my hair stand on end if that ever were to happen to me. Do you guys hunt in teams so the area can be watched a little better and for safety sake?

Can you hunt them at night with light and caller

I have read some info of guys making a coyote popsicle, take a 5 gallon bucket and mix blood, water and meat and freeze it. Take out into field and remove from bucket and place in area where you want to make your shots.

I would imagine you would want the bait to be there a couple days and then make your set
