I am currently a student at Isu, Looking to get out for the second opener without having to drive home to hunt. Looking for some general ideas on where to scout, not looking for anyones spots just some general areas to scout. Apologize in advance if this rubs anyone the wrong way and i am sure i will catch flak from someone.

go to iowa dnr hunting and go under "places to hunt and shoot" tab. Then look at the counties surrounding story county and story county: hamilton, webster, wright, polk, etc.

I'm sorry to hear that you are going to school there. I transferred there after 2 years of community college, spent the worst year of my life there, and quickly moved to SD. GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!
That advice is uncalled for, if you couldn't take the pressure that's your problem. ISU is a great place, and for the record I killed a shit load of ducks while in Ames. There sports teams are a plain joke though :stirthepot:

Better off to travel a bit. Not much around here these days. Plenty of geese, but plenty of people chasing them also. Had many a confrontation hunting the Ames geese. Little water is hurting too. Just makes if more crowded where there is water. Late season is when numbers will be decent, depending on weather

If you didn't kill birds here its cause you didn't try hard enough. It can be done but you gotta work for it. Not gonna fall in your lap like South Dakota. IMO that's the reason people go out of state later or mid season. Trying to have a few easy hunts. It doesn't take a waterfowl genius to kill ducks and geese in the Dakota's:rolleyes:

It was the 30,000 students, teachers that can't speak english, horrible NREM program, lack of hunting opportunities, only a month of ice fishing, and many many more things. I like my 12,000 students, 5 millions acres of public hunting, and ice fishing for 5 months out of the year on some of the best walleye and perch fisheries in the country.

Thats fine, but this kid is more than likely a first year kid who has big dreams and comments like you made are ignorant. Different strokes for different folks. Bottom line is there are birds to be had around there, and I will guarentee you that Ames made me a much better hunter.

*** Didn't you question Dreamweav's priorities when he preferred to hunt waterfowl instead of go to "Hobo Days"? Thats not contradictory at all. But you obviously know everything, so I'll shut up.

Didn't contradict at all. Just stated he's smart for going hunting instead of getting into the downwards spiral of partying every night like many new students do. Some of you folk just take comments too seriously like the people on IS... Never said I didn't shoot anything down there. I shot geese down there once they finally showed up in late November, shot a deer in town while watching cars drive by less than 100 yards away on 13th St (interesting experience), and piss pounded gills and crappies through the ice at Hickory Grove. Had I stayed there another year I would probably be 400lbs by now from all of the awesome food in town (I have dreams about eating Superdogs). Coming from north central IA it was just too big of a downgrade for me.

Consider joining the ISU or Story County DU chapters and hook up with some locals. There's places to hunt when there's water --- just gotta scout scout scout! I lived in Ames for 7 years and other than the lack of trees I loved my time there. :)

Lots of places I used to go when I lived in Ames.

Goose Lake Marsh just north of Jefferson

At the Colo exit there are some shit ponds right to the south as your coming up the off ramp, sometimes it has ducks and geese that trade out with Hendrickson you might be able to lock up a feed field over there north of 30.

If you would really like to get into them I would go to Shimon Marsh
Tons of Woodys and Teal early every year

You can walk in up on the far north red entrance just south of 585th st. on the big basin farthest to the west. Its about a 2.5 hour drive, but i would say its worth the jaunt.

The locals? ha

If you enjoy fence row banging, roost bustin, road blastin, 7 days a week pestering, hunting over 1960 shells, and hearing the echoing bellow of a flute tube then yes tag team up with the locals. Most of the locals are only locals and have never hunted outside of Iowa. But they'll be the first to tell you how good burning roost ponds to shoot 6 birds is. So if that trips your trigger, then "hook up" with the central iowa pro-staff members of story county. :61::61:
