We have always hunted 1st season @ Lansing and done well. We have never gone for the 2nd opener, but are thinking about it this year. Will the woodies and teal still be there or new ducks - gadwall, mallards???? Do you still hunt the small backwaters, or go to bigger water??

P.S. Really like De Soto, WI :D

We don't talk about Gunners. Its like fight club, and you know what the first rule of fight club is!

The wives still don't know about Gunners! They think its just a bar. ;)

went out today in the early afternoon to do a little scouting. I hope the malards were off feeding in the fields somewhere because we saw a total of 0 in three hours of not only driving but walking to pockets not accessable by boat. Did see some wood ducks. Later that afternoon did see a few mallards in a small pocket but not enough to satisfy all the duck boats I saw. WI will be open as well so maybe it will keep the few ducks in the air. Good luck and be safe to all this weekend. Let me know how anyone does on pool 9 or 8 and I will update. Pete

Just waiting to hear from the man with the boat for a time and place. Then it's off to bed. Still exited even though scouting was less than memorable. DU reports from north of us sound good but they probably wont be down by this weekend. Anyone know how far a duck can or will travel in a day?

JB, just want to thank you for bringing me along. Going on a blind date hunt with someone you never met before can be an uneasy feeling. You and Roger made me feel accepted and very comfortable. Although we didn't shoot limits and kill alot of ducks. I had a good time, and would hunt with you two any day of the season. P.S. hope your motor problem isn't to serious.

It was good hunting with you too. Ahh the memories:
1. Roasting brats over the heater
2. Sleeping in the boat
3. Dragging willows through the mud
4. Dragging yourself through the mud
5. Shooting a duck. :)
6. Paddling through the scenic fall festive backwaters of the mighty Mississip.
7. Drinking my beer!

Tell your friend to use both eyes when scouting next time! :)

This morning was a bust, 4 guys 4 ducks, a lot of high groups of mallards. this years water conditions, first high then low, made submergant vegitation hard to find. No food, ducks rest and move on, they arn't bunching up waiting for ice. anyhow better than working, walked in this evening and watched a couple hundred teal at the opposite end of the lake, then a surface drive jumped a log or dam and scattered them all. Teal and wood ducks circling back into the lake. Shot one at a time out of the flocks to keep it simple for the pup. not to mention missing some. Anyway I ate duck for supper and am full, Herman did good enough that tomorrow I am not holding off on multiples. If I could just get him to stop whining and figiting, thats what I get for having a high strung german shorthair for a duck dog. He is sleeping on the couch. Good day for all.

Satellite telemetry has shown that a duck can make it's entire migration flight in one day provided they have the right winds to ride. That's not to say they will, but they can.

Deer hunted this morning, 5 pointer and a button buck, but did see 6 flocks of mallards heading to the north each flock of at least 50. Couldn't hunt the afternoon so I went to the river late in the day to see if I could find where the mallards are. Needless to say I couldn't find them. Did find a lot of woodies in a little hole I couldn't motor to. If I wouldn't have pulled up the bino's I would have never seen them. Tomorrow morning in the deer stand and if action doesn't heat up herman and I will be making the march to set up for some really colorfull wood duck action.....if they are still around.

Big lake is almost impossible to hunt from a boat blind right now. We were lucky and found a small patch of bull rushes and had a small migration to keep us busy on wednesday. We shot alot of green heads, and finished the 2 days with the canvasback we were looking for. I wanted to go back in a week for round too, but there is absolutely no cover from the high water. There are a few boat slips made up on the lake, but thats it.

We hit a stump on the way out at almost idle speed that made everyones eyes get about as big around as sliver dollars. The water is way to low.

Talked to a bunch of guys at the lansing ramps who were headed down to Harpers Ferry where there are alot of boat slips I hear. Everyone shot em up on Wednesday, not so much Thursday.

I would say there is less than 500 divers on the big lake. but the majority are canvasbacks, with the second biggest population being bufflehead.

Ya I was there a couple weeks ago. The water was very low and cover was sparse but with a little work you can make a hide pretty easy. I will be there next weekend and the whole week of Thanksgiving. I go for the canvasbacks so good to know they are showing up. They were thick in NoDak last weekend still
