Hows your season starting?

Hunted this past Thursday the 3rd thru Labor day here in Central Iowa.

TH-Sunday had pretty good action with teal (and woodies) all over. I think the front pushed most of the locals out from what i saw yesterday, only got 1 teal out of a small group that came in.

My GSP (Tuff) did quite well, especially considering he isnt 6 months old yet.

Saw a few local mallards and quite a few Canada's. Really excited for regular duck season!

I do need some tips from dog trainers. Tuff will get a bit antsy, and likes to run off- he turns off his ears when he gets more than 15 yards away and knows I don't have any treats.

Also, if anyone tries to send me a message it won't come thru. I get an email notification but then can't view the message for whatever reason.

We beat em up pretty good Friday-Sunday. Friday was more of a shoot than a hunt because we had our 5 man limit in 12 minutes. Saturday and Sunday were a bit slower but we got it done. It was a good start to our year.

Its going slow for me but more do to cant scout and healing from elbow surgery. Hopefully I get the green light in two weeks to go full throttle from all the docs.

Had a good early teal season-freezer is looking good for small birds!

No boat, walk in only. Training my 6 month old GSP pup as we go.

Took my oldest friend out and he shot his first animal ever, nice blue wing. Took another buddy from work who had never been duck hunting as well.

Really excited for big duck season. Hoping the woodies stay until then, havent shot one before. Also saw my first pintail which was awesome!

Ordered a case of Boss 2 3/4 4's, they patterned extremely well thru my SBE2 with factory full choke, excited to see how they perform on birds.

Drawing up some plans to make a portable blind from pvc since we walk in everywhere + for fields (if anyone has plans/blueprints id love to see them).

Lastly, picked up a gorgeous 1973 Browning Auto 5 Light 12 for my upkand hunting. Figured my first bird dog deserved a new gun for his first wild bird-ky wife was super excited about that lol!

Good luck to everyone this year, scouting some new pieces these next few weeks before season!

I'm done for the year. With no boat and the lack of water I dont have any more options. Waterfowling in this state sucks if you don't have access to fields. Lakin is bone dry, Bays is lower than I've ever seen it.

Water reports from the DNR are wrong.

Just overall incredibly frustrating. Considering selling all my duck hunting stuff and just worrying about bowhunting.

Shouldn't be surprised I guess, a forum dedicated to Iowa waterfowling is about as dead as Pelosi's brain.

Have a good one all, im out until I get a boat. Isnt worth all the effort for no ducks sighted and no half decent places to walk in.

Guy Zenner said it way back when and this still affects us to this day.

"A person does not need a boat to hunt in the state of Iowa, and I am going to prove it to everybody."

Lack of water ==== lack of ducks! Cover is best I have seen it in years in central Iowa hot spots, just hard to hold birds with lack of flooded vegitation. Even with mud motor hard to get around local spots. Pray for rain!!!!!! Even if they can raise Saylorville/ Red rock a foot it would be good. Normal pool just a pain in the butt to get around/ hide!.

Ours has been good to us so far! I too was worried about the drought, but I’m able to find’em. Teal season was great the only day I didn’t limit out was the first day. I had a spot on public just off the road may 10’x15’ of water shot 3 off of it. There had been 50 there the day prior. Regular duck season came and had some great days and some good ones. Haven’t had a bad day yet, bu that bar is pretty high! For you who say you need a boat. I haven’t gone anywhere I’ve needed mine yet. All walk in. Gonna have to travel. I drive two hours from my home for one hunt..... and I’ll do it again!
