Default Need HELP!!!

Ok, my father in law received some old family pictures including this one. The family lived in mid/upper Wisconsin in the late 1800's-1920's +/-. We are at a loss on what they are doing. I have a guess but would love any input/ideas to try to lock it down. Notice what appear to be be poles with ropes in each of their hands. They are bundled up for sure. I will share a photo later of my father in laws grandma with a string of ducks hanging around her neck. Gotta think these folks were the real deal. thanks if you have any ideas.

Could be spearing Sturgeon. It happens every year on lake Winnebago. Cut a hole in the ice and sit in a shanty and spear Sturgeon through the ice.

I was thinking the same but was unsure. the poles seem a bit dainty but in these times, they could be spearing anything that comes in so a 5# pike may have been a huge catch. Much thanks to all and welcome any other information!

just thinking, it may be dainty shaft, if it is wood. Possible iron shaft? Good helft and momentum throwing downward.

Neat photo thanks for sharing.
I was at a loss, best I could come up with was maybe running nets under ice . This looks more plausible.
