Default Oklahoma or Kansas?

Looking to set up a hunt with a group of guys (less than 10) around the dates of January 1st - 5th for my bachelor party part 1.

For that time frame it looks like just the High Plains or SE zone in Kansas is open. Oklahoma is all fair game during that time.

We have some boats to use - 16 ft with 35 hp outboard, Four Rivers Mini, Beavertail stealth and final attack, possibly a couple other 14-16 ft flatbottoms.

A buddy hunted Kaw Lake in OK a few years ago and did okay. That lake seems to be pretty big sized though and could get scary in a hurry with a smaller boat and wind/waves.

Oklahoma is only 3% public land. Kansas seems to have more options but not sure about the SE zone?

Finding somewhere that wouldn't be froze, swallow enough for smaller boats, has decent vegetation, and walk in spots would be a plus. Any experience in these states?

Kaw;

Habitat Conditions, poor

Crop/types/status,other food, some wheat planted on Beaver Creek arm, some cut bean fiekds on Arkansas arm

duck number low

Goose number, Low

Hunter activity, Low

Kaw is the scariest lake I have duck hunted. If the wind picks up make sure you are okay to wait it out. Submerged and dead trees all over the open water. IMO, Kaw is only good when the Millet gets planted on the mud flatts there. I dont believe it got planted this year.

Kansas is hotter right now---In OK there is so much water in the large ponds and terrace channels that puddlers are staying on them. Just got off the phone with a buddy with a private lease near Cheyenne Bottoms. Says that mallards are finally there in good numbers.

I will second that on Kaw. It is a scary lake as are many of the lakes due to the almost north south axis of the lakes. I hunt out of a 12' Porta bote but since it is unsinkable and handles big waves but more importantly I don't need a ramp. If you have to cross open water in OK my advice is usually DO NOT do it unless you are seasoned with two foot waves or bigger. Gusts are an issue too. However the work around is to hug the shore and work your way through the many coves to your spot. Shore scout so you know where you want to be! Some like Canton have zip for protective coves though ---which is the one lake I love to hunt that after 35 years still scares the hell out of me.

Oklahoma lakes are hot after everything north freezes since they don't freeze over---some big coves do but I can always find open water. January is not a bad month to be here. Feel free to PM me for more discussions and I am always into company on a hunt.
