Post Todays waterfowl meeting result

It was just a rundown on how things worked, kind of an idea if you will what to expect from season structure to zone boundary changes. Most from prior meetings liked how the season structure was. I pointed out that we should consider 9 days 1st segment. It gives an extra weekend up front. A 12 day split which also allows us to close the season in the 2ND segment on a weekend. This only worked out in the south zone and mo river zone. If they follow last year's formula. North zones structure was different. Sz would close on the 15, mo river zone would close on the 22 of december. Both zones pick up a weekend in the 1st segment and a weekend in the 2ND. I will advocate that formula next month at the nrc meeting. We talked about why we locate goose season days towards the urban season. If we did not do this with no attempt to manage the population, many in those Urban areas would seek alternative measures to kill them. This would increase the risk if you will of us as waterfowlers seeing greater impacts to our said goose hunting oops. It was also mentioned about the larger late zone. This is what I will tell all those who support a larger late zone across Iowa Southern region and tributaries. Get off your assess and start attending the nrc meetings. Advocate the issue to them and during these upcoming listening sessions. The idnr will start collecting input on the matter but I cannot stress enough how important your voice is on the matter going forward until next Jan. You will have to show up in force and remain consistent from now until next Jan. Those who may be in the potentially larger late zone you better start sending your letters to the idnr, as a matter of public record mind you. All in all it was a good meeting. The ball is in your court boys can you stay in this long race to the Finnish is the question? Nice to have seen everyone today and certainly thank the idnr for the added efforts put on the table.

Any mention of the 2nd split for goose staying in December Bill?
Also are the metro zones meeting the goals for population reduction?
If not what impacts on the rest of the state would that hold.

Right now as it is we are holding our own on killing them in the 1st 9 days of season. A lot of the sub adults are being shot on the molt migration back into Iowa by states like south Dakota and Minnesota .if we fail to do our part other management tools will be used in Urban areas that may have negative implications for the birds in the state we do hunt. So right now we are holding our own when it comes to stability.

I'm calling bs on the metro season killing many of the targeted geese in the CR zone. Get rid of the 9 day or shorten it to one weekend. Go with a 3 bird limit in the metro zones all season. Those 9 days are still going to kill plenty of local birds in January. I'd bet that band data supports that claim.

Until all of the city governments allow hunting in city limits we aren't going to kill many of these targeted birds.

So add an additional 2 days to the already worthless 7 day early season to take away 2 days that are put on the end for late season opportunity? What am I missing here Bill?

Agree 100% !
“Other management” methods are already being used in CR anyway.

From the way I read it, yes you would be to adding more days to the early season but also making the 2nd opener later in October. Or atleast that's the only reason I can think of to make the South zone close on Dec 15 like Bill stated.

If you dont push the 2nd opener back to Oct 26, it won't get you to that Dec 15 timeframe.

I still think those metro zones shouldnt count towards our regular goose days. They should be just like teal season, bonus days that states can use if desired. If they dont have a metro goose issue, they dont use the days, plan and simple.

I disagree 100%, it's not that hard to kill geese during the metro season. Besides should anyone value the opinion from someone who can not distinguish the difference between decoys and live birds during the last week of the season. Its not everyday that someone is dumb enough to rip a round into my spread and blinds at just over 200 yards.

cuvvy 9 day 1st segment 12 day split and a 51 day 2nd segment.

The formula does two things. Adds two weekends 1 up front and 1 at the back end. The adjusted split allows us to do that.

Correct me if I am wrong fellas , If the IDNR uses the same formula as last year , south zone will close December 10, mo river zone december 15th.
