Default Question for Gatortail owners

went to change the shaft grease. The zerk fitting was giving up fits. It would feel like it would plug up. So, stuck a bike needle down it.

Now, the question, did the original zerk fittings for this motor have a ball/check valve?

Cuz, it doesnt have it anymore. If it did, is it going to hurt anything in the shaft?

Im thinking it is so tiny it wouldnt do any damage?

If it will cause damage, what is the best way to make sure we get it out, short of complete dissection of the shaft and guts?

Having a tiny ball bearing and spring floating around in shaft grease isn't good. It could eventually migrate into bearings on shaft and lock them up. Plus the open zerk may allow water to enter shaft tube. IMO I would install a new zerk and try to flush bearing out of tube with new grease. 50-50 chance it may not hurt anything, but if it does you could be left stranded with a locked up prop shaft. Complete tear down and clean out would be the right way to do it. Good Luck.

Thanks. We did buy a new zero fitting. My concern is the new one does not have a ball. I am thinking that this one is not the one we need. How would it keep things water right?

Waiting to hear back from gator tail on Monday.

Our plan was to replace the zero, and pump another tube of grease threw it.

If you just pushed the ball and spring in with the needle, the ball and spring may be near the hole once you remove the zerk and possibly fished out with a pick. If you greased it after dislodging the ball and spring or rotated the shaft all bets are off.
