Default Areas around Des Moines

Hi Guys,

I'm not looking for anyones spot, but I am looking for a good bass fishing lake and any general areas to try around Des Moines.

I really got out of fishing for a while and don't go around Des Moines. So don't be worried about me going to your secret lake. However, a buddy wants to go out Saturday on our Kayaks. We only practice catch and release as well.

Any help on what lake I should try within 45 minutes of Des Moines metro? Any good tips on productive areas (e.g. dam, south end, north end, etc.)

I've only tried Big Creek and 12 mile 5 years ago. But didn't have hardly any luck (really early spring).

If you are fishing out of a Kayak, then Maffit lake is your best bet! It is located just west of I-35 and the Bypass. There is a little boat ramp on each side of the lake for Kayak launching.

I'm not really a bass guy but I have caught a couple big ones out of Big Creek on accident.

The only part about Moffit I dont like if you are only going to go out one time on it since it is getting later in the year is the $20.00 fee to get on it.

Users must purchase an annual boat permit at Des Moines Water Works General Office, located at 2201 George Flagg Parkway, in Des Moines, for $20.00.
