How do they come up with these numbers?

Arkansas & Louisiana account for 2 million+ birds killed in the Mississippi Flyway.

All are best guess WAGs using best science algorithms! Only the "hunters" number appears to be close and that number is seriously (and sadly) declining.

Were I a DNR waterfowl person, I'd be focused on reversing that decline today! I would bet that the numbers of ducks kilt in Iowa is not close to the numbers kilt in Louisiana or Arkansas; so I'd not worry too much about denting the duck population ... for now, I'd focus on increasing the number of waterfowlers! ASAP! And do not pencil-whip that number! Actually listen to the inputs of waterfowlers who hunt a lot and are in the know; they can help drive the train!

Iowa used to have over 40,000 duck hunters and now we are down to ~14,000 ... why??? That is disgusting! ... and embarrassing!

I don't know about the numbers but for 10-15 years the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service would send me envelopes and every Duck I shot I would mail in the wing after I cleaned it. When I ran out of envelopes I would call a number and they mailed me more. This went on for a long time and I was bagging a lot of Ducks back then.
I even bagged a banded Woodduck and called the number in and they asked how I had cleaned it and I said I had breasted it out. They ask if they could have the rest of the carcass and I said yes and how did I get the band off its foot and I told him I had cut it off. He then asked if he could have that foot also I said sure what were they going to check if it had both right and left foot, and the next day Fed Ex showed up with a box and I boxed it up and the next day they came back and picked it up.
Then one day I called for more envelopes and they said they wanted some from another area and thanks. I was done sending in wings.
I will tell you I was a Duck eating SOB since I was mailing in so many birds wings I made sure I did not have over my possession limit in the freezer.
I have no idea what they were studying for sure other than the health of the birds. I don't know if it had anything to do with counts of birds taken per Hunter. Hope this helps
