Default Snow Goose 1-day Guide

I have a group of friends that will be heading down to Shanendoah, IA / Riverton area here the first week of March. We would like to try and get on a single day guided hunt. We don't have decoys. It's more of a weekend away from the wives and kids. But we would really like to put a hurt on some snow geese. Anyone know of any guides in the area or a group that would let us join in on a hunt?

We tried this service once: http://midcontflyway.com/

While I've heard some good things about this guide service our experience was neutral.

Understandably, it's beyond his control. But we saw thousands of geese in the area as we drove there, we apparently caught a bad migration day. We didn't see a single goose once we were in the blind. Not one. We did see some distant flocks (miles away) moving, but nothing gave us a look. But still had to pay full price of course, which is a bit of a bummer. It was a good breakfast, but not quite worth $900 for 6 of us.

The guide is a character. He was amiable most of the time, but at times a little rough. He works pretty hard to make your hunt enjoyable, but since we didn't see a single goose, it was all about spending time in the blind with friends. And I'm not sure what it would have been like if we had any shooting.

The blind is nice enough. We helped break ice for an hour or so on a very cold morning, so it was nice to get into the heated blind out of the wind. It's comfortable. Breakfast was good but if cleanliness is important to you, don't watch.

The bunk house is very basic. We didn't stay there, but did go in to settle up with him.

All in all, I'm sure if you hit the right day this could be a really fun snow goose hunt. If the geese aren't moving, you will spend some quality time in the blind enjoying an expensive breakfast.

Rob Lee (515) 979-6000. We hooked up with him 6 years ago through IaW here, and haven't missed a season with him since.

Just a heads up - obviously a lot can change between now and then, but as the migration looks currently, and as has happened many times historically, I wouldn't get my heart set on hunting Mound that far into March this year. Just my $.02.

Thoughts any body else?

Ahhh, I gotcha. In either case, cancel their migration!
