Default New to Dubuque, IA

Hey all,

I recently moved to Dubuque a few weeks ago. I got into duck hunting last year, and would really like to get some hunting in this year. Does anyone have any suggestions, or some decent public land I can take a crack at? Not trying to steal anyone's spot, just looking for a little "direction".

Also, if you are ever looking for another gun in the boat/field, let me know. I want to get out as much as possible this year!

This is always a good place to start:

My family hunts a lot around the area, but I'm not local anymore. There are really great places to hunt the river right in Dubuque, but there certainly are north and south of there. How old are you? Do you have a boat? Like Tootall said...a little more info will go a long ways

My apologies, I moved here from Mason City, but spent a few years in Ankeny after graduating from Iowa State. I spent most my hunting in a tree stand before my buddy took me duck hunting a few times. I was hooked the second the first group locked on our decoys.

I do not have a boat, I have been scouring the internet to find one in my price range. I don't have many decoys, but I will have a dozen or two pretty soon. Just very eager to get out there and start calling birds in. Like I said, I'm not trying to poach anyone's spot, just need some guidance on some areas, or tips.

If you don't have a boat the easiest place to hunt (IMO) is Green Island just a bit south of you. I grew up hunting there and whenever I go back home in the fall I try to make it out at least once. The walk in area can be a shit show but can be especially good during the week. don't be afraid to go to the right side of the tree line by the boat ramp (you will know what I am talking about when you hunt it). I have found that once the birds cross the trees they work a lot better beings few people hunt in that section. you can always sit off the dike and pass shoot but what fun is that, haha.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Go hit Green Island. It can be crowded, but every public area can be.

Thanks for all the input guys! Is Green Island a place where I can just use waders and set my decoys (no boat needed?)

Take a look at behind John Deer north of Dubuque and Mud lake as well for walk in.
Just FYI Join Ike's Club in Dubuqe about 3 minutes from you. Meet the people there shooting Trap & Skeet and 5 Stand a lot of Duck hunters there. I also shoot there.

There is a designated walk in area, no boat needed but there are a few holes here and there.

I'm new to the area too and as far as I know in the same boat (waders no boat) interested in having another gun along sometime this season? I'm over in Farley myself.

Hey man! I play college baseball at Clarke in Dubuque. I duck/goose hunt within 20 min of the city and kill birds consistently. In the same situation as you without a boat, but if you end up getting a boat and ever want a hunting buddy I have prolly 6 dozen duck decoys along with 3 dozen goose decoys, I know quite a few places we could hammer birds on the miss with a boat too because I hunt the banks often and see where the birds pile up in huntable areas. But yeah let me know!
