Default 2016 Spring Snow's Wrap Up

With the decoys in the shed and the gun in the cabinet now, figured it would be a good time to share some of the highlights of the season from the last spring. As all of us know, it was a crazy and weird one with the temps getting warm early and causing the birds to race through. I found myself hunting very early for my area and having nice length season compared to what I figured was going to happen. Got to hunt with some new faces and some new places as well that made the season a pretty good one.

Hope you enjoy the images:

First hunt of the year with set up under clear night skies allowed me to do some nightscapes:

Wish the water in this drainage ditch would of stuck around for more of the season but within a few days, it was gone:

My phone buzzed and some buddies were putting a plan together to hunt on a weekend so I loaded up the gear and traveled south to join them. We dealt with high winds both days but did okay on the 1st day but didn't fire a shot on the 2nd day. Getting Casey's pizza both days saved us thou:

It was time to hit the water with the layout boats which turned into an adventure when the wind shifted and caused all the ice to come from the east side of the marsh to the west side which pushed my decoys together and made it alittle tough to get out of the marsh:

The adults arrived so we had high hopes for a good feed the next morning but with clouds and no wind, we only got one volley in but captured my buddy pulling the trigger on a hypersonic:

All the ice was gone now so we decided to hit the water again for the weekend. On Saturday, we saw quite a few birds moving but they didn't want to stop except this one Rossie that decided to join our spread and set there for a good few hours, we let him go hoping he would bring in a future f5 tornado:

The next day, the wind switched and we saw less birds but what we did, generally gave us a look and we had some good shooting:

Sam coming back with a retrieve of some of the birds that fell out on the water but his motor was acting up alittle so after that, I had retriever duty:

Panorama sketch of the spread from one day, 4 layout boats carried the 120-ish floaters out:

Than I got a message to come load up the gear and head west so the next morning I found myself in a nice looking corn field but we got set up alittle late and the 1st groups of birds in, the camera was still in the blind bag. Got it out in time to atleast capture this single, it was a good thing Miller didn't miss:

A few days later, found a goofy looking field with half of it not being worked amongst a bunch of drainage intakes but luckily, the birds liked it for some reason so the next morning, proved to be a good one:

The scouts were out the next few days and found a new group of birds so we decided to put an action plan on them when the morning was calling for sunshine and a nice nw wind:

They were calling for south winds again so I motored out to the water again and this hunt is one I'd like to have back as I saw 3 flocks in the morning and decided I better get groceries so started to pick up and in the next few hours, saw enough flocks to make me cuss at myself. Atleast I captured me throwing some decoys out:

Decided to set up the camera for video on the next hunt and had a group in that was inside 10 yards when I called the shot and one of the guys after the shooting says, you had to get some great video on that one! Unfortunately, I had gotten the start-stop messed up so when I thought I was starting the video, I was actually stopping it

Got a neat shot of the birds though on some old farm equipment:

The season was winding down but I hit the gravel again and found some birds moving from one feed to the next so decided to go to the new feed the next afternoon and it paid off. With a good wind and sunshine, I decided to try whites and had a nice solo shoot. I believe I whiffed on my 1st shot the majority of the time because the birds kept getting closer when I raised up to shoot along with them not flaring

Nothing like the first bunch of the afternoon doing this once they got over my decoys:

The first two bunches I shot into joined together and came back around for another go around with the Beretta:

With about each bunch I saw coming into me, I started to get greedy and let these go that came well within gun range:

I was rewarded with a bigger bunch at a better angle:

Last flock of the afternoon:

A nice dozen that should of been alot more if I could of hit something that afternoon

The photo with the shell just going off is pretty cool, shot string just left the barrel.

Great job, but your photography skills need some work. They look great.

Nice pics! Especially like the one with the shot just going off and seeing fire out the barrel and the shot string streaming towards the sky.
