Default Grebe?





Saw this guy on the Missouri river today I believe its a western grebe. Pretty sweet bird!

Indeed it is. I've never seen one in Iowa but they're common on lake Oahe so it makes sense to see one on the river.

That's definitely a Western Grebe, they're the biggest grebe in North America and the one that does the crazy running on top of the water mating display from nature shows. Definitely not a common bird in Iowa by any means, looks like you got a pretty darn good look at it too!

I saw one at Brushy last fall. That was the best part of the day, fishing was slow.

No, not a Grebe. The bird in the first two pics is definitely a penguin. I have shot many like it in Argentina. Good for nothing but gumbo. I hope you didn't let it get away.
