Default Snows at Squaw Creek and Fremont County!

Was today going by Squaw Creek NWR near Mound City, MO, twice - to and from the Kansas City area.

YES ... I would say there are around 15,000 light geese in that area -- in the air and on the Refuge's eastern water areas.

As I drove north late Thursday afternoon, I saw a couple bunches in the air - flying back south toward the refuge.

AND at Fox Lake - the borrow pit lake next to the I-29/Hamburg interchange, I saw around 3,000 of the silver white ghosts!

This is a great time of year ... there are 10s of thousands of all manner of waterfowl loafing on the river sandbars and adjacent wetlands and feeding in the Valley cornfields all the way to Sioux City - getting into condition for the great journey north. AWESOME.

From Facebook - 36th Infantry Division photo ... These Soldiers make me so very proud ... and I worry about their welfare and for their families and children ... God, please keep them safe.

There has been at least 100,000 in the area around Mound City as of yesterday. Squaw Creek isn't always the main roost in the area.

As of 5:00 tonight the snows were gone from fox lake but it was black with ducks and Canadas. Big lake holds quite a few snows which is about 6 miles from squaw.

I heard that Fox lake was up for sale and the guy that owns it was looking to lease it out for spring goose.

It has a for sale sign on it. Was wondering what they wanted for it but the company on the sign doesn't have it in their listings that I could find. I have heard it silted in really bad after the 2011 flood. Would be interesting to see what they want for it.

More Snows and Blues frequenting Fremont County .... and north

We are seeing several feeding flocks of ~500+ in the Missouri River Valley these days and we are thinking these first bunches are feeding in the vicinity south of Council Bluffs. However, I would estimate that the Squaw Creek flock is really spreading out in nearly every direction as the population grows to its maximum. Expect there will be a large flock at Riverton WMA and feeding in the Nishnabotna Valley(s) north for 60 miles or more. Have seen more waterfowl and light geese on water this year that I have not seen them on in previous 20 years. Regular scouting will be the key to success!

Planning to set up next weekend!

Stu I hope you get into some big groups.
I am sure I will be out somewhere in the river valleys over the next few weekends.

Tim is a huge waterfowler. Great guy worked on several projects with him when I worked in Omaha.

What's everyones best opinion of what this bad snowstorm in the southern half of Mo. and Ok and Ark. going to do to the snow migration. I doubt if there are very many in northern Mo. and a lot south of there. Will they go further south or just sit it out. Looks and continues to be pretty bad for the geese and outfitters that are set up down there. Not sure I believe the warm forecast they are predicting for us. Snowed here so hard today I could hardly see to drive for a while. Really a screwy spring but it is early.

Birds have been streaming over NWMO for the last 4 days. They seem to be skipping Squaw for the time being. Once the refuge gets some open water that will change. The leading edge birds go from NWMO all the way to North Platte NE by the millions. I don't see the storm slowing the KS birds down much but the birds stuck in the Mississippi drainage might be delayed a few days. This is shaping up to be an intense migration.

The price tag on Fox lake is a cool 1.395 million $$$.
