Default Unique or young Canvasback??

My friend sent me a picture of a canvasback he shot Saturday. I haven't seen one like this before, curious if anyone else has. I don't think its a young canvasback, but rather something unique with the coloring below the head. Looking for opinions.

canvasback\mottled duck hybrid in eclipse plumage. pen raised by the guy that drives a blue dodge, triple money banded. used as an indicator duck to let everyone know when the ducks will arrive in iowa.

Very unique. Pigmentation doesn't seem to be an issue based on other features, and hybridization seems unlikely based on body/bill shape. IDK, cool bird and I would certainly send photos to a biologist and get a professioinal opinion.

A Canvasback ugly duckling! He was an outkast and was formed by too much inbreeding. You did him a favor by taking his life!
