depending on what you want to be trapping will determine what trap to set if you just want to get a few coon then a snare would be the best way to get alot of coon for cheap i think snares are like a buck a piece. but if you want to set leg holds the best overall size to get you started would be some #1 #2 if your lucky you can find some use traps or buy new if i was to buy new ones it would be duke i like the way they catch fur the #1 will get rats mink and do it well the #2 work good for fox coon mink rats otter good luck it is a fun sport and it is starting to pay off

The two best sources to get you started are trapperman.com and iowatrapperstalk.com. Join and start reading the archives, don't be afraid to ask questions.

I agree with cbeaver, a 1.5 double coil is a great universal trap. Work great on most species in iowa and have even seen them hold coyotes(wouldnt want to try my luck all the time on yotes) I thikn you can get dukes for around $50-$60 per doz, new. Or there are always traps for sale on trapperman and iowatrappers talk. Both great places for info, kust not this time of year cause most of those guys are busy trapping.

This is where I would start. http://www.iowatrappers.com/Directors.html
Find a director in your area, give them a call and tell them you want to hook up with someone for a weekend. More than likely they will find someone you can run with. Just remember some of these guys run balls to the wall and will work your arse off. But you will learn more than what your brain will absorb.

I also agree with the 1.5 coil spring... Invest in a skinning grambel also. check out funketraptags.com pretty reasonable prices and they r located in central Iowa. If I didn't give away my VHS tapes i would send them to u but I got rid off them when I got rid of the VHS player lol

like Bullfrog said, find someone to go out with and see how they set and get advice from them. Hands on is the easiest way to learn IMO. Also i'm pretty stuck on snares and conibears, easiest and fastest way to trap!

trapping is a love hate deal.......actually i just love it and the best advice i can give you is the more time you put in a set the more your going to catch... and as a starter you might go for more muskrats then other animals.
