I always wonder who is relying on minimum wage that it needs to keep going up? The only ones in know that make minimum wage are high schoolers.

What's wrong with the free market taking care of itself?

If you go to any fast food joint, especially in big cities, you will see all kinds of 20-30 year olds working there. People CAN not live on minimum wage, it is not designed for that. It is designed as a stepping stone, for high schoolers to earn gas money. You hurt the middle class when this happens, as EVERYTHING gets a price increase. This is my opinion of course, but if people want a livable wage, then need to get a position that pays. The construction industry is hurting for people right now. Many people don't want to work that hard for their money though. I've talked to quite a few younger people about becoming a welder, as I have made a great living off it. I get a lot of, why would I want to work that hard answers. Not everyone can be in an office making great money!!!!

The HVAC industry is really hurting for people too. A person, any age can start out at 13-16$ just for showing up everyday. Problem is not many can do that. If by chance we see some people trying to better themselves we will pay for HVAC school. Once a person is done with the 4 year schooling (1 night a week for 5 months through out the year) they are eligible to make 20-30$ an hour...

Long Grove Labs and Coldfronts are moving exactly in the direction I support and would recommend to younger people in high school or anybody working for minimum wage or just above.

Don't rely on the government for your next pay raise. You don't need a 4 year degree or work behind a desk to make a good living.

But you will have to take imitative and get yourself some additional education!

I guess personally, I disagree that minimum wage isn't a "livable" wage. It's just the minimum.. Many people can live on minimum wage, while not having luxury items (cellphone/cableTV/Internet/eating out/movies/etc. etc.

I do agree it is meant as a starting point for young people and should be left behind once they either further their education or attend a trade school or learn a skill and climb the "ladder" wherever that is.

People are lazy and no one is making it uncomfortable for them to be where they are. Minimum wage SHOULD be uncomfortable at a certain age in life, if it's not enough, find more.

-Can't afford kids? Don't have them.
-Can't afford your own groceries? Cancel the Dish Network and US Cellular plans.
-Can't afford luxury items or experiences? Find a better job, acquire skills for said job(s).

Maybe i'm an asshole, but if you want more than the minimum, you're going to have to work for it.

Disclaimer** These are my opinions and they may butt hurt you.

I manage a lawn care / landscaping business. Good workers are impossible to find. We'll start a guy out at $12-14/hr to sit on a lawn mower and most of them can't handle that, and if they do make it through one season they think they've earned a $50k a year salary the next year.
They don't want to work, they would rather get government handouts and then bitch about not having money. There's no such thing as working your way up in a company, they want it given to them.

Raising minimum wage won't change this line of thinking in my opinion, but what do I know, I'm just one of the dumbasses that works hard and has never cared to figure out how to work the government's system.

Part of the problem is that society places a value on a nice car, a smart phone and must see TV. My kids are in elementary school and I cannot belive how many kids show up at my house with an iPhone and iPad in tow.

I firmly believe that if the government does not tax the shit out of us and keep people off of handouts this will all turn around as the crowd of 40 year old and younger people that are living off credit and debt nears retirement. When they realize they are broke and can't retire, they might start to teach the younger generation to save instead of how great it is to be able to watch TV on their Tablet while they Facebook their friends on their phone as they drive down the road in their car with air conditioned seats.

I firmly believe that being broke is 99 times out of 100 a symptom of behavior, not low income. I make much less money now than I did 5 years ago, but I have more money in the bank and more fun on the weekends. There were 2 changes that effected this. Half the household income and a 100% increase in the good financial decisions I make.

Bad thing, It's the opposite of trickle down, Increasing everyone's cost's creates more Tax revenue good for Gov. bad for us. We got a lot of bad deals going on, When the government sets a tariff on products coming into the US who do think pays that... Yep we do.. Need to keep GOV out of the private sector as much as possible. Like all the comments, I don't think many pay that low now. There's still a lot good kids out there that are going to strive for success. Unfortunately there's getting to be more and more that believe they're entitled to everything for nothing.
