Default When is to cold to bring them

I think this was discussed last year, we are thinking about going out tomorrow. It is going to be pretty cold in the am. I always keep him out of water until he really needs in. He has a neoprene vest.

I am just looking for more experienced hunters advice on this one. We are still learning and lucky if we get a duck or two but still having fun

thanks for any info on this

Depends really on how you hunt. Today it is 1 degree in Spencer. If I went today I would have left the dog at home. I have a boat blind and run a heater on him but it's just to cold. Also ice can be hard on a dog. Always error on the side of caution when it comes to the dog.

Use chamois cloths to dry them off as soon as they get out of water. The dryer you can keep them the better.

x'2 If you take the dog make sure they are close enough to get some heat, and I have put down a piece of tuff R insualtion board for her to lay on after she gets toweled off, Might think twice about a younger dog If I cannot take my dog I am not going hunting that is what she was bred for and has years of training.
Keep them hydrated as well

Thanks for the tip on the keeping them dry, I think he is going to stay home. It looks super cold tonight, we will have a Mr Buddy heater with us but not worth putting him in any harm. He is 5 loves to go and will be a little upset tomorrow am

Really depends on the breed of dog and whether they are outside or inside dog. My golden retrievers, labs and chesies never stay home because of the cold. They were outside only dogs an I never had any issues. They broke ice on many occasions but were conditioned for outside. High protein feed and food during the hunts.

My lab was so warm today steam was comming off of him without having the heat on in the boat.
My lab goes from the water to the boat where it's warm enough to hunt in your tee shirt lol. Never had a problem in 10 yrs.. Also X2 on the good dog food with at least 30% protein. Ol Roy dog food won't cut it

Yep, hell even without a heater going on a cold morning you'll see the steam rolling off him and his vest. You do not want a loose fitting dog vest. My dog wears one thats a bit of a struggle to get on, but it's unreal how dry it keeps him underneath the vest.
