November 22nd, 2001 we had a grand passage of mallards. I know Howard remembers the day well. He was hunting Chichaqua, and I was hunting Otter. Almost every mallard in the northern hemisphere flew South. There were V's of mallards 3 miles wide and 2 miles long stretched across the sky. Every 2nd or 3rd flock would drop from the heavens, and into the marsh. I shot my limit in no time flat, and then I sat and watched the show hoping for some others, but they never came. The next day we went out, and there wasn't a mallard to be found or any other duck for that matter.

I was just checking weather all over the Dakotas and Saskatchewan. Then I came over here and boom, this is the thread I wanted to see! The way I look at it Canada starts locking up tomorrow, Dakotas Monday. That ,in my estimation, puts the birds here Tuesday. I think it will be the best day in a couple of years. I only remember one great day last year, but this could be special I think.

I don't think you will see Dakota birds until late week. Birds hold on big water this time of year, and 15 degrees won't move much. For you guys i think it will be a few days of decent movement. The mega wads should hold tight.

Barometric pressures have a lot more to do with moving birds than some guys realize too. That storm in 2001 that moved those mallards out wasn't a nasty winter storm. In fact, the only weather the Dakotas got was a little sleet.

anyone want to make a bet...

the shitty weather over the weekend will push the calendar migration into iowa right on or around veterans day. widgeon, gadwall, mallards and divers will push in and be gone in 2-3 days.

the big mallard push will move through after the first weekend in december.

anyone? anyone? you guys act like this doesn't happen every year

same as it ever was

I somewhat agree but this is a much stronger and longer than normal mid season front. It's supposed to rival the all time record for days straight not topping freezing in Nov. for the Twin City area and it's happening in the first half of the month. Wouldn't call it same ole same ole. I haven't seen a wide enough swath of snow predicted to think guys expectations are going to be met, though. What it should do is put the "normal" amount of mallards here at the "normal" time that I was accustomed to for my first 25 years of hunting.

I'm going with one of the bigger flights we've seen in years. The last grand passage I seen was the one Bullcan was talking g about. I wasn't able to shoot back then but I was still in the blinf with my dad. I remember it so vividly as there were just mallards migrating all day. Buy when I see winter storm watches and warnings for Minnesota with some places maybe expecting a foot of snow I get a little excited!! Its gonna get real good fast starting tomorrow and last through next week with the peak the middle of this week.

The way I remember it was they got a shit load of snow but I could be wrong. I remember the afternoon the mallards showed but there was an unreal gadwall migration 3 days after that

The big migration in 01 was a snow storm across the Dakotas. The crazy migration with no snow was in 98 with the 90+ winds from the west. Neither were a "grand passage". The Grand Passage was in '93. Think this storm system with a foot or more of snow across Canada and the Dakotas.

Should be good this week, but no where near a grand passage.
