Default The grand passage

This is a copy of a post from the refuge. If it happens it should be something to see...

"Grand Passage may be here again

Well you boys down south best be ready to call in sick next week because we are about to have a fall flight not seen in some time! We are looking at a total freeze out of the Canadian prairies and both of the Dakotas simultaneously! This is going to force a huge amount of birds south in one giant push sometime starting Sunday and peaking probably Monday night or Tuesday.*

Get ready boys cuz here they come!"

There will be a flight but no grand passage. Not enough snow involved for that.

I got a feeling you're right, but if it happens it would be something to see. Most of these young guys have never seen it. Be warned, it's almost hypnotizing when it happens.

Not going to get my panties in a bunch but I will be out Tuesday in the boat. Will be interesting to see what shows up with the change of weather.

It's going to be short and hopefully sweet. It's coming. Mass migration of blackbirds this afternoon. Seen some masses of seagulls as well.

I'm starting to get "the twitch"......every time I go outside town and drive past a cornfield, pond, or other body of water, every bird starts to look like a duck or a goose. I hear geese flying over my house with super human hearing- even over the TV. I've re-organized my blind bag half a dozen times......and I don't get my vacation time until the 21st. No worries, those mallards will still be around on Turkey day for sure:-)

I am hoping and praying that they are over dramatizing this storm. If not it will put an end to my local hunting for the year. The snow is what will hurt more than temps. Birds can keep water open if food is available.

The million $ question is can we get any of these birds to stay in Iowa for a few days. We have the best habitat NW Iowa has seen in years so I am hopeful. They also are calling off the cold some now, highs close to 30 with good wind won't lock it up to tight.

I don't think it will be a grand passage
I do think it's the end of most marsh hunting,
And the rivers will be ok
We shall see.....I hope for a thaw after this cold snap
