Default 6.5 HP 212 CC Predator

Has anyone built a mud motor from one of these Harbor Freight engines? Is this even enough to push a 1648 boat?

Smallest I've been in was a 9.5 on a 1448, pushed boat pretty good with a couple big guys in it. Should work pretty good on a small river or marsh on 1648. Harbor freight motors are China built Briggs from the looks of them. Havn't herd any thing bad about them, but would look at getting as much HP as they offer.

you can do a lot to turn those motors up...but i don't think it would ever be quite enough power to push a 16 ft. you would be lucky to squeeze 12-13 hp out of one and you would probably be pushing it to the limit for that. id hate to blow a hole in a block a mile from shore...

personally i think 16 hp for a longtail on a 16 ft should be the minimum...but thats just my opinion

I have a predator 346 on a 14 foot flat bottom and probably wouldn't go with a 212 in your position. If you plan on running a river you would probably have trouble getting upstream when loaded down. If you decide to go with a harbor freight engine buy the warranty, they're cheap

Have you got a frame and prop lined up? We took a 9.5 Briggs engine off a GoDevil Grawdad frame and put a 23 HP Vanguard Small block on it, fairly easy swap. Had to reprop it, and modify motor mount abit. Some of the kit Frames you build yourself are easily modified to fit about any size motor on them.

Way underpowered for a 1648. I wouldn't go with anything less than 18-23hp especially being you'll be using it on the river

I have a 212 Pred with a stage 1 kit, run it on a 1232. Moves good with me, dog and gear. 2 guys slows it down, but still works. I ran it on my 14 foot deep and wide lund v, went ok with just me. Have not tried with 2 guys.

You would not want to run it on a 16 foot jon.

Have one on my layout boat...don't waist your time on one for a big boat.

I have the previous generation 13HP Greyhound motor from HF on my 1542 and wouldn't go any smaller than that. My buddy has the the same motor on his 14' and it pushes about the same speeds as his 6HP outboard.
We've been using them for about 4 years with no issues.
I agree on the warranty, it covers about anything that could go wrong. If you use the 20% off coupon the savings basically pays for the warranty.
