They're still around where I go...some public but a lot on managed property for pheasants on private ground...quite a few of them actually...

This was a couple years back though...

Out scouting duck holes before North opener I busted a covey of pheasant - 12 (8 roosters) busted out of the same corner post almost under my feet. About knocked me on my butt from the shock.

Why is this? I've always wondered why people say this and why ducks would come east, instead of heading straight south? Just because Louisiana is the wintering area?

That's just the route they take they move east towards the Missouri and go down in between Missouri and Mississippi, as well as straight down the Missouri through eastern nebraska. I think you might find more Minnesota birds in Eastern Iowa along the Mississippi, but most go through Illinois I believe.

Just look at some migration tracks of birds and where bands are killed tells you quite a bit.

I think the Miss. river kills way more Mn. and Canada birds than Dakota birds unless we get one of those huge west wind storms. Don't know that I've ever killed a Dakota band.

A front went thru Tuesday and there was a good flight of gadwall and pintail so the front this weekend should do some good. Should be more interesting than the Iowa Game. Go Cards.

I've seen quite a few geese lately and saw a couple tornadoes of feeding mallards last night. Hopefully there are more to come and I can actually hunt them!

a few years ago, my brother shot a pintail at green island that was banded in sask...but that was a year of big west wind storms. i do think thats the major difference in migrations east to west. the ducks seem to stay in the dakotas longer than minnesotam, which makes the peak migration later in central and western ia

living in des moines for a combined total of 10 or so years, it was very apparent that most of our ducks came from the dakotas, while a majority of our geese came from minnesota. there are always a lot of minnesota goose bands shot in central iowa. we also spotted a few yellow collars from minnesota from time to time...

Bands I have shot off the Mississippi river have come from ND and Sask.
