Smile “Butt, Belly, Beak & Bang!” on Lead Shot

Here's an interesting view written about banning LEAD SHOT:

In her April blog column of “Butt, Belly, Beak, Bang”, avid duck hunter, Holly Heyser, takes on the claims of Audubon Californiain and their efforts to ban lead ammo for all hunting in California.

http://www.shotgunlife.com/shotgun-lives/holly-heyser/lead-ammo-let-s-be-honest-about-what-kills-birds.html

Did you note who wrote it? That is great!

Sometimes I really wonder if those non-hunters who so vociferously yell about the awful hunters who use lead, don't really want to ban all hunting ... and thereafter, they want to ban those terrible, violent GUNS. They are really gun haters and they really want to make us into criminals and CONTROL us "lesser" intellectuals. To them and that, I say, HOGWASH!

So she's upset with California Audubon because one of their fans threw hunters under the bus? Sounds to me like she just got a little butthurt and threw a fit. Lead is a huge deal in Cali because of the California Condors and the work that is being put into recovery. They're scavengers, like our eagles, and get hit the hardest.

There's always going to be anti hunters, but getting our panties in a wad and complaining about it won't solve anything... making sure WE HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT and are only killing target animals ---- ? That will get us a lot further. You might not think lead is a big deal, but after cutting a (small) lead sinker out of a swan's crop, you won't convince me otherwise. So cars kill more birds than lead? Drunk drivers probably kill more people than texters, but that doesn't mean I should shrug it off and say it doesn't have an effect. We should be doing the best we can to protect our resources, we work too damn hard on the other aspects to just scream foul because the push for change didn't come from within. Almost everyone I work with and associate with uses non-toxic exclusively from turkey to big game to upland birds. I use lead on occasion but I try my damndest not to (wish some loads were easier to find.. that would be a start)- like I said, we work too damn hard to say oh, its just a small %, it doesn't matter.

Don't you dare say a ward about Rose's democratic fellowship. Shame, Shame, Stew, for posting such a terrible contradiction to their beliefs.

Interesting article. I'm not completely against going nontoxic shot only, I'm just skeptical of the motive for doing so. What significant is the impact of lead shot on wildlife today? Does anybody really know? These are my main questions on the subject.

I use almost all nontoxic shot now. I do not look forward to the day I have to shoot nontoxic shot through small bore shotguns at doves.

I have not shot lead for years. DO we need lead? I can hunt just as well with the waterfowl loads we have today. If needed they could offer more sizes to get it done.

I think for the most part non-toxics are at the point in their development that they are equal to or better than lead. The down side,it makes the market less diverse and easier to control from a pricing or availability standpoint. The switch over to steel really cut into the number of people who used to reload to save money. If I had to guess,I would say it cut it by 3/4. It is not saving a guy any money to reload today, just the opposite, cost went up,way up.

As for the lead poisoning issue,it was being discussed back in the 40's and 50's in our area, like at Forney Lake because of the number of hunters that used that lake for years. Today, with the decline in hunter numbers and the other factors that impact waterfowl and other wildlife,I'm not so sure it can be said lead has the impact that it was once thought to have. I still use it for upland birds and turkey's and will as long as I can. I realize the potential for harm is there but not nearly as much as mowing ditches, building windmills, tilling every acre available, tiling every wetland that can be wiped out and spraying every damn inch of weeds to eliminate the habitat will I be convinced that shooting birds with lead is the biggest problem the birds face.
