Default Longest shot on a turkey?

So I was in hunting Wisconsin last weekend, and first let me say turkeys are about as plentiful in Wisconsin as deer are here in Iowa. Anyways I encountered multiple birds in over the course of the weekend, but the one that got away came in across a hay field and stopped behind a barbed wire fence at 65 yards and unfortunately I hesitated to squeeze the trigger. I was shooting 3.5" 5's with a pattern master extended range choke. Anybody think I could have dropped him? What's the longest shots you guys have accurately placed on weary gobblers?

It is all personal preference but I have dropped turkeys at 65 and above with my old ten guage with full choke. I would be willing to bet you would have had a dead bird if you would have shot.

Good call. Not a good shot to take.

53 uphill steps was the longest I ever counted.

You made the right call. Taking a long shot and not killing the bird hurts worse than not attempting the shot.

Not the greatest of shots for sure. You made the right decision for yourself. No need to second guess yourself, IMHO. I'm typically pretty confident in my shooting and not sure I'd take that shot. That is one that you either want a clean miss or drop dead. I've never had a bird hang up in sight so I can't speak from experience. Many times over a ridge or in the woods but if I see them and they see the dekes, its been a done deal

Good call.. I wouldn't have shot. I've killed one bird at 50 that didn't flinch after the shot and that's pretty unusual.. I think I got lucky there lol. And I think you could reasonably say that you could have killed that bird at 65.... but then again, I wouldn't bet breakfast on it. Anytime there's question, you've already put the odds against yourself... save the shell for a clean, sure kill. Good call on your part!

Agree on not shooting. I mistakingly shot one at about 60 yards when I was younger with 12ga 3". A few BB's hit the right place luckily. I didn't think he was that far until I walked to get him. They can be hard to judge in an open feild. I prefer to get them within 40 yards even with 3-1/2". 50+ yard shots just sounds like a wounded bird.

Definatly like the others have said that is a poke. I have taken one down with that same setup. 3 1/2" with a extended pattern master. He as 63 yards on the range finder. It was also the last day of the season was the only reason I tried it. You made a good call. There is still 3 more weekends in 4th season.

That was the thing with these Wisconsin birds. They were all spooky. I had two or three situations like this. One was just yesterday morning before I left. I was sitting on a farm path in the woods below a hay field. My decoy was on the path. A lone tom came struting down the hay field and had just got to the timber line, when he turned and walked the other way. There wasnt even a fence blocking his path. In this situation I believe my decoy was not very visible. It's just all about being in the right place at the right time.

I stoned one at 45 yds once. Got halfway out to him and he stood up and ran away. Left gun by tree & turkeys run faster then me.

30 yds or less now for this cat.

Good job on passing that shot get those big birds in close. When I watch some of these turkey videos on TV and the hunters "miss"....about 95% of the time its because they are shooting long. In actuality hitting the bird just not killing it. Stupid shots. Then they proceed to talk about "how could I miss a turkey" for the next 3minutes.

Never had to shoot one longer than 30 yards. Most of them are about 10 yards or less.

I shot one Sun. at 36 yards only because I was calling while surrounded by water on three sides. That seemed plenty long looking down the barrel. I wouldn't think of shooting at one at 60 yards. I'd try real hard not to shoot one at 10 or under too, though.

It sucks watching them walk away but you made the right decision.
