Default 210 in 16 days

QUESTION: What is 210 in 16 days?

ANSWER: That is the number of BWT harvested at one [neighboring state's] duck club in their "Teal Only" season this year. They are at a latitude same as goes "just north of Indianola" and close to a major river. They believe the migration of BWT is over, but they had a great time and many full-limit days. They are delighted at the "tune-up" opportunity this extended season provides. They believe that the mallards, woodies, and other ducks that they passed on, will still be here in a couple weeks when the normal full season arrives. Those ducks are local ducks and aren't leaving just yet like BWT.

LESSON FOR IOWA: Iowa ought to seriously get its "sierra" together and lobby hard for a teal-only season in the [postage-stamp sized LOL] "Missouri River Zone" ... and maybe even the South Zone. The North Zone would still have the 5-day "any duck" season. Thus allowing for a full 60-day regular duck season when it comes. Remember the 5 P's = Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Procedure" ... so that leads to another question:

How is DNR responding to the possibility of being offered a teal-only season?

A. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ... hello!
B. No, no, no, hell no ... what do you not understand about NO!
C. Ah ... we don't have enough resources ... so NO!
D. Our staff votes NO!
E. It is just too hard to do ... so NO!
F. If those pesky Teal Season proponents will just go away ... NO!
G. Silence from the Wallace Building ... NO!
H. Makes too much sense ... so NO!

Which answer would you choose?

I don't care what kind of bird your shooting, 13 birds a day is quite an average.
Saurday would have been a completley different outcome for a lot of guys if there was a need to identify before pulling the trigger. We hunted adjacent to a public area and the shots these guys were taking were insane, especially with the number of people that packed into the place. Downright scary.

How many guys are in that hunt club to attain the 210? That is a key piece of information.

Still BWT in MN so its not over yet, I feel you about most being gone by opener. It sucks when guys in Fla are shooting ducks (teal) before guys in MN. Mn moved opener ahead the past 2 years and the weather was warmer so we did have good teal shoots on opener both years. The 2 years prior were very poor openers as the teal were gone, 1 year I did not fire a shot at a teal all opening weekend.

Start to feel like we raise em for everyone else to shoot em.

Then I read things about teal only season not counting against the 60 days of duck season.

I do have a hard time believing that the local big ducks would not get run off the public marshes that get lots of pressure.

North Zone should not have the stupid 5 day season. They too should have the early teal season.

Sorry, I don't believe it is possible for an early teal season in the Northe Zone.

DTM you are correct and for good reason 2. However they can have it as a 2 day and stick those days to the second opener if they want to. But I wouldnt hold my breath on it.

I would like to see what the harvest is on day 3 ,4, 5

For the NZ & SZ

Then I would like to see the Bag limit physical make up of the North vs South zone.

How many other ducks are being shot in the 5 day early season in the North? Not Teal
How many other ducks are being shot in the 5 day early season in the South Zone? Not Teal

It has happens every year that we miss the big numbers of Teal that pass through Iowa. This year we missed it by a week and a half and by the time our early season got here the bulk of the teal had left for warmer temps.

Presently it is my opinion that the south zone waterfowler is being forced to comply with USFWS regs on the issue as being part of the Iowa duck production region. Fact of the matter is, its not and nor does any of the 2 million dollars of federal duck stamp revenues spent in the south zone as it strictly relates to the PPJV bit!

Rules can be changed and clarity added to give south zone duck hunters more early opportunaties why at the same time improve upon how thier 60 day season structure is broken down.

The fact about this opportunity si that if we sit around on our hands until Jan to take it on, we in fact may be put behind the 8 ball once again in doing what needs to be done to figure out where to place a Teal Only Zone in the state of Iowa. It may turn out to be another cluster fk like the 3rd zone.

Sit around and wait, reactive vs proactive. We are always reactive and thus said changes or ideas are so hard to implement. Cluster FK

Those local mallards or woodies in the south zone would find areas to hide but they would return. They are not going to leave the state early. Its just not in the DNA to do so.

What I would want to know before this information is used for any action to support a legal change is:

Was it private ground?

How many hunters participated in the hunt?

What was the average harvest per day for the club?

What was the average harvest per hunter per day?

There is a lot of information missing on the OP about details of the "hunt club" in order for me to see it being legite in supporting a change in Iowa.

Lets say there are 10 hunters in this group. So that would on average be 21 birds each. Then divide that by the 16 days in the season, which would lead to an average of 1.31 birds a day.

And to boot would Iowa keep a 6 bird limit or would it be dropped to 4 like Nebraska?
